YSY Meeting Notes from May 4, 2010
Good morning to all:As you will see from the May 4, 2010 agenda, we improvised to make this meeting possible. Cindy, Larry, Jerry and Cecilia were Toastmaster for the day, and we agreed to do Table Topics. We pulled out Manh’s paper bag of quotations, which made us all think on our feet. It was great practice for public speaking.Larry, many thanks in setting the room and making it possible for us to hold the meeting. We are excited to have an Icebreaker scheduled for next week, and I continue to practice my speech on “Hitting the Brick Wall”. Have a wonderful week and hope to see you next week.Cecilia

Meeting Notes from April 6, 2010 YSY Toastmasters Meeting

Meeting theme was “Abraham Lincoln’s Perseverance” and the word of the day was Perseverance. With his humble beginnings, President Lincoln is an example and a model of incredible perseverance against all odds.

Present: Evelyn J. Glass, Connie Jones, Manh Vo, Larry McDowell, Jerry Carter, Cindy Adams, Elma Goodwin, Charna Pettaway, and Cecilia Velastegui

Toastmaster: Cecilia Velastegui

Table Topics Master: Connie Jones

Timer: Evelyn J. Glass

Grammarian & Ah Counter: Larry McDowell

Evaluator of the speech: None

General Evaluator: Manh Vo

We did not have a speaker for today – we encouraged each other to collaborate in accomplishing the speaking commitments for the following sessions.

Connie Jones was terrific as our Table Topics Master for today by keeping the theme alive. She continued with the theme of “perseverance” by introducing topics that considered ideas that we have thought about in our lives. Larry spoke on the topic “What if I had a million dollars…” Evelyn spoke on the topic of “as soon as I…” Manh addressed the issue of “the reason for not persevering…if only I had time for” and Charna was awarded the Best Table Topics for her speech relating to an accomplishment that she is proud of “focus on the present”.

We had two new Toastmaster guests: Cindy and Jerry. We welcomed Cindy as our new member to Young Street Yappers. We were pleased to have Jerry join us today and encourage him to return.

Charna has assigned roles for the month of April.  On April 13, 2010, Tonya Williams-Hardin is schedule to be out Toastmaster.

Meeting Notes February 9, 2010
Subject: Toastmasters: Feb 9 Meeting recap

Ahhh.todays meeting was great! Maybe it was our new venue (Room 1113) with the sunshine coming in. Maybe it was the well-organized room by our Sergeant of Arms, Frankie Reed. Or maybe it was the energy an enthusiasm from the eight members present. Whatever it was, lets do it again!

Todays theme was The Spirit of New Orleans and the word of the day was phoenix.

Lee Alviar was the prepared speaker. Her talk, Is it Me recounted the quest for New Years resolutions that always seems to fall flat by February. She also inspired us with reflections of her ascent up the Toastmasters leadership ranks, always asking the question, it is me when often times she wasnt sure if she was moving forward because she wanted to, or because others were pushing her. She affirmed, yes, its me, meaning, she made the choice to grow, and in so doing, help others grow too. Great job, Lee.

Manh Vo led the Table Topics segment. She asked questions on current events like, will the Toyota recalls affect the economy? None of the participants used the word of the day, so unfortunately we did not award a Best table Topics. Boo.Hoo (well do better next week)

February 16 Meeting: Manh is Toastmaster. First SPEAKER. will be Cecilia Velastegui. She will be giving her third speech entitled, My Hero!
S
tep up, we want to hear you, too! Email Manh or Charna by this Friday if you plan to speak.

See ya next week.

YSY Meeting Recap DEC 8, 2009
Yappers: “Let It Snow!” was the theme for this week’s meeting.  The Toastmaster started the meeting by describing recent winter weather events across Texas.  The Table Topics Master (Cecilia Valestegui) followed with weather related questions.  Jackie Crayton, who hates winter, was voted the Best Table Topics Speaker.  The prepared speech was presented by Connie Jones, C&L #2, “I am learning to live by faith.”  While Connie’s 5-7 minute speech ran a bit longer than required, all were inspired by her look back to her childhood to review how words of the “Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag” and other words became meaningful as she matured.  Connie’s speech was expertly evaluated by Elma Goodwin.  Larry Mc Dowell, as the General Evaluator, gave several critical observations about the meeting, including the need for reminders when the meeting location is moved and the need to start on time.  Sergeant at Arms Frankie Reed had the meeting room prepared on time.  Brian Hart, as the Grammarian/Ah Counter, recorded and reported on the ahs, and hums, which were few. Yvonne Deen, a new Intern in the Office of the Regional Administrator, was our welcome guest.  We hope that she will join us again. Due to the schedules of holiday celebrations, vacation time, and work conflicts, the next meeting will be January 12, 2010 in the first floor Auditorium. Members have asked the scheduled Toastmaster to email the agenda and meeting location no later than the day before the meeting. Club Officer Elections:  January 12.  Submit Your Club Officers List Online On Time!
It's important for club leaders to submit a list of newly elected club officers for the January 2009 through June 2009 term. Don't miss the January 15 deadline!
See District 25 Website for dates, times and locations of officer training.  Also, check the YSY website—www.yappers.info. See you next year!

YSY Meeting Tuesday November 10, 2009
We had a great meeting this week with nine people in attendance including one visitor, Shaniqua Neal.  The theme of the meeting was “Holiday’s” and I shared some of the anxiety I have with my family during the holidays.  We also  paused for a moment of silence for the victims of the Ft Hood tragedy.Attendees included: Rebecca Sarmiento, Shaniqua Neal, Pat Evans, Brian Hart Evelyn Glass, Frankie Reed, Lee Alviar, Cecelia Velastegui and Charna Pettaway.Charna was the Toastmaster for the evening and the word of the day was fungible.  Freely exchangeable for or replaceable by another of like nature or kind in the satisfaction of an obligation.    We had three prepared speeches (yeah) so we did not haveTable Topics questions.  The three presenters and their speech titles were:·        Patricia Evans – Me and my Exercise.  This was Patricia’s Ice Breaker and she told an encouraging story about how exercise has positively impacted her father’s life and how good exercise makes her feel.·        Frankie Reed – A Dog Named Squeak.  Frankie gave a passionate speech about the history of rat terriers and how Squeak came into her life.  ·        Rebecca Sarmineto – Past, Present and Future.  Rebecca’s speech about her life was so eloquently present.  She also won the Best Speaker contextBrian Hart served as the Timer/Vote Counter.Cecelia Velastegui served as the Grammarian/Ah Counter.Evelyn Glass served as the General Evaluator.Evelyn Glass, Lee Alviar and Charna Pettaway evaluated the three speeches.Lee Alviar is the Toastmaster for next week’s meeting.  I am attaching the spreadsheet to sign up for the various roles and speeches through the end of the year.  Please do your part and sign up to serve at the meetings. The November 24th meeting which is the week of Thanksgiving is cancelled.

If you’re looking for ways to unwind, de-stress, or just take a load off of your mind, join us for Happy Hour every Tuesday at noon in the first floor auditorium.  The party is BYOB (bring your own bottle of water).See you next week!

Hello All,What a wonderful meeting we had today.  As promised, I have attached the spreadsheet that list the different roles and here’s your opportunity to volunteer ahead of time.  Serving in the different roles helps each of us develop our leadership skills and puts us much closer to becoming a competent leader.  It also helps the flow of the meetings when we know our roles ahead of time.  I also want to emphasize how important it is to give regular speeches.  That’s the best way to strengthen your communication skills. Some of you did not receive the e-mail I sent out last night so I’m resending it (see below).  Before I let you go I want to give kudos to our AWESOME Toastmaster this week, Elma.  I also want to give kudos to Jackie and Larry for “Breaking the Ice”.  Great job! Please complete the roles document and send it back to me ASAP.  Also, don’t forget to schedule your speeches through the end of December.Have a great week!Charna

Subject: News from Young Street Yapper's VP of Education

Hello Everyone,

I don’t know about you but turning back the clock one hour sure did me some good.   By the way, I’ve been looking at all the new folks that have joined YSYs and I’m getting really excited about all the great things I see us doing as a club.  My schedule tends to be a little unpredictable but I plan to be at the meeting this Tuesday and I hope I get an opportunity to speak with each of you.  As VP of Education, one of my responsibilities is to schedule speeches so I’ll have my handy dandy excel spreadsheet and a calendar.  One way to sharpen your speaking skills is to speak as often as possible (at least once a month).  Also, let me know if you’re in need of a mentor and/or need help with a speech. It is District 25 Toastmasters 60th anniversary! Come join us in our homecoming celebration at the Fall Conference November 20th & 21st. Many past District Governors will be joining us and we have two former presidents of Toastmasters International as our keynote speakers. Guess what?  Your VP of Education is the Volunteer Chair for the Fall Conference and I need volunteers. There’s also a reception for “First Timers” where you can meet other people in the district that have recently joined Toastmasters and it is a great chance to network.  Please plan to attend the Fall Conference and let me know if you’re willing to spend a hour or two as a conference volunteer.  Nobody could beg like James Brown but I’m going to try.  Please, please, please be a volunteer at the Fall Conference.

The District 25 Fall Conference is an opportunity to relax, make new friends, enhance speaking and leadership skills, and have some fun!

Recap for TM meeting: July 14, 2009
REcap for TM meeting: July 14, 2009

Attended Charna, Manh, & Leza

It was a really pleasant meeting.  The theme was “Remembering Michael” & since the group was so small, we were able to banter more about our own memories of the late Mr. Jackson.

Word of the Day: Loquacious – talkative or given to fluent or excessive talk

Leza presented her speech from the Advanced Speaking to Inform manual titled “Today is Bastille Day.... July 14th   France's July 4th”.  Charna & I were so entranced by the great performance & intrigued by the subject we had to fight the desire to interrupt the speech w/our many questions.  Leza has once again enlightened us with history!

Next meeting is July 21… Toastmaster--Shannon Hills, CC-B
& a roll call for attendance.

Thanks,

Manh

Meeting Recap June 9th, 2009 and announcements

Hello All,

We had a great meeting this week with five people in attendance; Manh Vo, Shannon Hills, Leza Mesiah, Frankie Reed and Charna Pettaway.  The theme of the meeting was “Today’s Vision: Tomorrow’s Reality”.

Charna was the Toastmaster for the evening and the word of the day was churrigueresque (choor-ee-guh-RESK) adjective: Baroque; lavish; over-the-top.

Frankie gave her “Ice Breaker” speech and she did a fantastic job.  We all learned so much about Frankie’s travels, her career and her dreams for life as a retired Fed.  Congratulations Frankie! Manh was the “Table Topics Master” and she really gave the meeting a spark with her table topics exercise.  Manh started the table topics discussion with a 2009 highlight in her life.  She then had each member of the group pull a coin from her hand and we all spoke about what happened in our life in the year that was on the coin.

Manh Vo served as the Timer/Vote Counter.

Frankie Reed served as the Grammarian/Ah Counter.

Leza “Margarita” Mesiah served as the General Evaluator.

Meeting Recap May 26, 2009
What a meeting we had!  The room was set up in the usual welcoming arrangement and everyone in attendance was on-time.  The gavel struck the lectern at exactly 5:30 PM. A suggestion that we move the meeting to the Rodeo Bar in the Adolphus Hotel was entertained but not approved by those in attendance. The lone speaker was excited about demonstrating her red Easy Button as a part of her speech, “Easy Buttons for Toastmasters,”  C&L Project #10, Inspire your Audience. The speaker identified 5 Easy Buttons that will result in success in Toastmasters: 1.  Showing up—regularly attending meetings; get to know members2.  Present manual speeches—from C&L manual, advanced manuals, leadership manuals3.  Be a mentor or be mentored—this will help you or someone else accomplish your or their goals4.  Volunteer for the variety of meeting roles and track progress in CL manual for credit5.  Serve as a club officer Being the lone speaker and completing within the time limits, the speaker knew that she was the best for the meeting.  It was a very lonely meeting.  Should have gone to the Rodeo Bar.The meeting adjourned a little earlier than usual as there was not more business. No one volunteered for not week’s meeting Toastmaster.  Please contact Shannon about the role you wish to serve at next week’s meeting. Membership—need 2 additional members by June 23 to earn Distinguished Club status!Election of Officers—President—Shannon HillsVP EdVP MemVP PRSecretaryTreasurerSrgt@Arms Evelyn will be on travel June 2 and on vacation June 16 and 23.

 RECAP: TM MEETING May12TH

What a full and lively meeting we had on May 12th!

Attended:  Evelyn, Shawneequa, Leza, Manh, Kathleen, Shannon, and Jeff

Guest: Coretta Turner and (guest turned new member) Frankie Reed

We had a speech-only meeting with 3 speakers- yes THREE!!!

Evelyn had a speech titles “The Story of Stuff”, complete with a handout (or you can go to http://www.storyofstuff.com to learn more).  Evelyn did a great job peaking our interest in this very important subject of “sustainable production and consumption.”  Leza is a great job w/her evaluation (as usual).

Manh had a speech titled “Give them a Raise.” – She did okay (and I can say this because I’m writing the minutes), but needs practice.  Thank you so much to Shannon for her wonderful evaluation.  I attempted to use some of it when I did the real thing- but I’m afraid the “big bosses” had the outcome in mind before my opportunity to speak.

Corretta had a speech titled “M.E.M.S” (I might be wrong on this???).   She is a very well-practiced and experienced Toastmaster.    We were very glad to have her and hope she joins us again.  Thank you Shawneequa for your well thought out, excellent review.

Kathleen was the General Evaluator.

Shawneequa was Timer.

Jeff was the Ah-counter.

Next meeting: May 19

Thanks,

Manh

Meeting Notes April 21, 2009
Attended: Manh Vo, Charna Pettaway, Kathleen Casey, Lesa Mesiah, Shannon Hills, and special guest Correta Turner. We had a Table Topics only meeting – actually 2 rounds of Table Topics! First round was on Turning Points in our lives. The second was based on quotes from a book (oops, didn’t write the title- Charna, help J??) brought in by Correta.   We had a lovely time trying to incorporate the work of the day “peccadillo” in our TT… but hope to encourage everyone to bring in some speeches for the next meetings. Speaking of… (ha, I made a pun!)… Any volunteers for tomorrow 5/12???

We discussed ways to get and keep new members.
By then it was 6:30pm, so we adjourned.
