Yappers Meeting Recap March 17, 2009
What a great time we are having at Toastmasters! Please join me in welcoming new member
Mr. Jeff Bennett. Not only did he join Toastmasters on Tuesday evening but he also gave his Icebreaker
(#1). What a great speech for a new member! His speech, entitled “Potential to
Purpose”, not only gave us a glimpse of Jeff the person but also showcased his natural gift for speaking.
Ms. Charna Pettaway also gave a great speech (#8), entitled “Organizational Skills”. She
wowed the audience with not only her preparedness but also her use of props. She had us on pin and needles,
waiting for her to open her big box. What a great illustration for her speech! Ms.
Leza Mesiah did a marvelous job as Table Topics Master, challenging us with our most memorable meal or what we wanted to be
when we grew up. Ms. Manh Vo served as evaluator for Ms. Pettaway’s speech, and I, as Toastmaster,
also served as Evaluator for Mr. Bennett’s speech as well as General Evaluator. The Theme of the
meeting was “Success”, and the word of the day was “obsequious” – (adj.) excessively compliant
or submissive [Donald acted like Susan’s servant, obeying her every request in an obsequious manner.]We are still purposefully working on improving
our communication and leadership skills. Even if you have attained the level of communication and leadership
skills desired, we would appreciate your feedback, tips of the trade, and presence while we work on ours. For
those of you not in attendance, you were sorely missed. However, I’ve got good news for you.
There will be another Toastmaster’s meeting next week. Ms. Vo will be the Toastmaster, and
Mr. Bennett will be doing another speech. Way to raise the bar for the rest of us! I
predict that he’ll be a Competent Communicator (10 speeches) in record time!We were also delighted to have another guest to visit with
us – Ms. Tracie Spears, high school counselor from Cedar Hill. She jumped right in, participating
as if she had been with us all year. I’ll give Ms. Mesiah credit for some of that, since she takes
no prisoners!We
had too much fun as we improved our leadership and communication skills.Members in attendance:Manh VoLeza MesiahCharna Pettaway Jeffrey Bennett –

Toastmasters Meeting March 10, 2009 Recap
Subject: Toastmasters Meeting March 10, 2009 RecapWe had a great
meeting this week with five people in attendance including one visitor, Jeffrey Bennett. The theme of the meeting was
“Commitment”. I was so excited about being recognized as an outstanding officer that it brought to mind
how great I’d be if I beefed up my commitment to the YSYs. I asked each of the members to take some time to reevaluate
their commitment to Toastmasters (TM)? I believe the TM experience can be so rewarding when you attend meetings regularly,
be prepared to speak at least once a month and be proactive and volunteer for different meeting roles. So my question
to each of you is what can we contribute individually to take our club to the next level? We didn’t have any prepared
presentations but we had a blast responding to several Table Topics questions. Each person first drew words out of a
cup. One cup had colors, another cup had body parts and the third cup had condiments. Each person told a story
around their 3 words. Shawneequa pulled yellow, nose and I forget the specific condiment but she told the funniest story about
being pregnant and how large her nose got. Shannon spoke about pledging in a Sorority and the pledge perm that was put
in her hair using mayonnaise, vinegar, eggs, olive oil. Needless to say, we had a great time creating stories utilizing
some strange ingredients. The next round each person pulled a specific question out of a cup. For example, Manh’s question
asked if she were stranded on an island who she’d want to be stranded with and why. She chose her favorite author
and talked about how he would read to her and since his background was in teaching, she would ask him all kinds of questions.
Jeff responded to the current economic crisis and discussed how he believes the economy can be turned around. It has
been a joy having Jeff at the club meetings. Manh Vo served as the Timer/Vote Counter.Jeff Bennett served as the Grammarian/Ah Counter.Shawneequa
Harris served as the General Evaluator.Shannon Hills is our distinguished VP of Education
and reminded everyone that their table topics discussion should include the word of the day and that every presentation has
3 parts; opening, body, and closing.Charna was the Toastmaster for
the evening and the word of the day was gargantum. Shawneequa Harris will serve as the Toastmaster for our meeting on March 17th.
Charna & Jeff have agreed to speak. Please let Shawneequa know if you plan to attend the meeting next week and the
role you will serve in. Eleven members have paid their 6 months dues. Thank you! Please pay your dues
renewal fee of $35 to me ASAP. If you’re looking for ways to unwind, de-stress, or just take a load off of your mind, join
us for Happy Hour every Tuesday at 5:30 in the 2nd floor SSA break room. The party is BYOB (bring your own
bottle of water). See you next week! Charna

Yappers meeting notes from March 3, 2009
Hello all. You missed a treat last night.
We had one visitor, Jeffrey Bennett. A self employed architect currently on assignment at the Informart.
Thanks for coming Jeff. We hope to see you again. We didn’t have a prepared speaker so Table Topics
was the delight of the night – albeit with a twist. Instead of the Table Topics Master asking all the questions, members
asked questions of each other. It was a hoot - with the last round of questions being the best. The theme
was relationship book titles. Names of book titles were placed in Charna’s hand, literally, and members
selected a title and spoke about it. Titles included:1. He’s just not that into you2. Act like a lady, think
like a man3. Men are from Mars, Women are from VenusAnd my favorite…4.
Women want more love…men want more sex! What we thought would be a short meeting lasted the full hour! Great
job Yappers! Members in attendance:Shannon HillsShawneequa HarrisCharna Pettaway Visitor:Jeffrey Bennett Next meeting: Tuesday, March 10. Do we have a volunteer to serve as Toastmaster? Speakers…we need you!
