December 16, 2008

Fellow Young Street Yappers (YSYs):

We had a great meeting on Tuesday, December 16, 2008. The theme was "Value of Toastmasters".

Our Sergeant at Arms Charna Pettaway opened our meeting on time with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Shawneequa Harris served as the Toastmaster and shared briefly a few personal benefits of participating in Toastmasters, including reducing/removing the Ums, Ahs, and other filler words from speech (no one has surpassed my record during my first visit to YSYs), as well as enhancing one’s leadership skills. The word of the day was probity – noun 1.) adherence to the highest principles and ideals; synonyms – honesty, uprightness, virtue, rectitude, and integrity.

Kevin Monday served as the Grammarian/Ah Counter. Cheryl Williams served as the Time/Vote Counter. Evelyn Glass did an icebreaker, entitled, "Black Friday". As always, she did an excellent job. She shared the evolution of their mother-daughter relationship as her daughter grew from child to an adult. Shawneequa served as her evaluator.

Charna Pettaway served as Table Topics Master, with Kevin, Cheryl, and Shawneequa speaking about what would be the best gift to receive or give if money were no object and what gift you would give if you had no money.

We chose not to vote on the best Table Topics Speaker or the Best of the Big 3.Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 6,

Hello all. We had a great meeting on Tuesday, December 9, 2008. The theme was "I’m so Excited"

Shannon, TM, began by quizzing the group on their recall of the lyrics from the 1970’s hit "I’m so excited" by the Pointer Sisters. Charna came REAL close to remembering the classic line… "And I know I know I know I know… I know I want you! Shannon expressed how excited she was to have 3 new members! She encouraged the new members to get all they can out of Toastmasters and encouraged seasoned members to offer encouragement and support to help members succeed. The word of the day was blithe – adj 1.) joyous, merry, or gay in disposition

Evelyn was the evening speaker. She challenged Young Street Yappers to become a Distinguished Club and shared the process to make that happen. She highlighted her personal goals for the next 6-months and encouraged each member to do the same. Thanks Evelyn for being our head cheerleader.

Leza Mesiah provided our Table Topics segment. The question, "If you could give 1 million dollars to one (or two) charities, which would you choose and why". Responses were varied as our membership and we left knowing a little more about what makes the other tick. Cheryl was recognized as best Table Topics Speaker.

Shannon was recognized as the best of the Big 3.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 16 and Shawneequa Harris will be the Toastmaster. Please let Shawneequa know your availability.
